Belize

 

Belize will celebrate World Food Day on Friday 12 October 2007, stating 9:00 a.m., at the Memorial Park in Belize City, the commercial capital of the country.  

The short opening ceremonies will have the Mayoress of the City, Ms. Zenida Moya, and Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and Chairman of Food Security Commission, Hon. Vildo Marin, addressing the fair on the “Right to Food”.  Thereafter, activities for the day will include:

  1. v     Six different ethnic groups (Mopan Maya, Ketchi Maya , East Indian, Garifuna, Mestizo, Creole) will prepare and distribute samples of their cultural foods. Chefs from one of the biggest hotels will also do live demonstrations of food preparation with locally grown produce.
  2. v     Agriculture will display plants, crops, fruits and provide leaflets, pamphlets on exhibits.
  3. v     Prizes will be given for poster competition.
  4. v     Numerous health agencies will be doing free BMI, Diabetes tests, blood pressure test, providing nutrition and healthy lifestyle information.
  5. v     Different schools will do live on stage entertainments/presentations on “The Right to Food”, good nutrition and promoting locally grown produce.
  6. v     Samples of different foods, fruits and dry fruit snacks will be given to all school children coming from sixty different schools.

The event is being organized by a very committed World Food Day Celebration Committee which has representation from numerous agencies and organizations such as:  The Food Security Commission of Belize, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, HECOPAB, PAHO, Belize City Council, Belize Tourism Board, BELTRAIDE, Institute for Creative Arts, ITVET, QADs, Ministry of Education, Belize Agriculture Health Authority, Press/Media and many others.

World Food Day in Belize promises to be an exciting and dynamic day aimed at increasing public awareness and greater appreciation for locally grown foods, good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. It is expected that over 2500 people will attend. At present, the World Food Day Jingle is being aired in most radio stations.
