During the first "Latin American and Caribbean Summit on Integration and Development", the heads of state and government of all countries in the region committed themselves to supporting the initiative “Latin America and the Caribbean without Hunger (ALSCH)”.
The state of alimentary insecurity in the world- SOFI 2008
According to SOFI 2008, the number of hungry people in the world has reached 963 million people. During 2008, 40 million people have been lead to hunger due to the rise of food prices.

Peru's government declared a state of emergency on June, 2008, because of the low temperatures in eleven departments, forty provinces with over a million people affected. This alerted about the need to provide support to the more vulnerable communities.
FAO supports sustainable forest management in Chile (more information available in spanish)
Chilean Agriculture Minister and the FAO representative in the country signed an agreement to support evaluation and progress of sustainable forest management. The project also inlcudes the monitoring of sustainable management in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay
3rd International Seminar on Income Transfers (more information available in spanish)
International experts and representatives of governments of the Region, meeting at the Regional Office of FAO, will analyze programs of conditional income transfers in Latin America and the Caribbean on the 1st and 2nd of December.
