Food and Nutrition Surveillance System Network

The Food and Nutrition Surveillance System Network (SISVAN) is a technical mechanism constituted by public, private or independent institutions with the purpose of promoting the establishment and development of food and nutrition surveillance linked to food security policy and progressively increase the technological capacity based in the adoption of the exchange of experiences and knowledge between countries, using basically their own technical, human and financial resources.

The SISVAN network supports also the follow-up activities to the International Conference on Nutrition (Rome, 1992) and the World Food Summit (Rome, 1996). For this purpose, the SISVAN network is promoting the generation of Country Nutritional Profiles, as a basis for the development of the Food Insecurity and Vulnerability Information and Mapping Systems (FIVIMS).

SISVAN is operating since 1996 with the sponsorship of the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (FAO/RLC). The countries that officially integrate the SISVAN network are: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

In accordance to what was established in the Plan of Action of the SISVAN Network 2000-2001, prepared during the Eighth Round Table of the Network held in Mexico from 30 November to 3 December 1999, the Website of the Network has been installed in http://www.usach.cl/sisvan, thanks to the offer of the Universidad de Santiago, Chile.
