Animal and Plant Health and Food Safety

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is the main technical cooperation agency of the United Nations addressing Animal and Plant Health, in all aspects and different phases of food production, integrating Animal and Plant Health and Food Safety.

FAO works on an integrated approach based in the food chain, for the management of food quality and safety, acknowledging the responsibility of all stakeholders in this chain for the supply of safe, healthy and nutritious food, with the aim of preventing food-borne diseases, protecting consumers and promoting fair practices in the food trade.

In order to guarantee animal and plant health and food safety, each one of the steps in the complex process of bringing food to the consumer must be strengthened, from the production of plant and animal basic products up to its processing, packing, transport and trade. This approach of consumer protection constitutes, furthermore, a tool to enhance and increase competitiveness levels for trade of food, in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
