Rural Development and Agrarian Policies

Rural Development and Agrarian Policies are core issues in the work of the Regional Office, which continues promoting the out coming recommendations of the International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ICARRD), organized by FAO and the Government of Brazil in March 2006. After the Experts Consultation, held in Santiago in 2007, with the participation of governmental leaders and representatives, FAO, with the support of IFAD, promotes the strengthening of the Institutional Network Responsible of Territorial Policies, Agrarian Reform and Access to Land, which is part of the MERCOSUR Specialized Meeting on Family Agriculture.

During 2007, FAO, in collaboration with IFAD, the Regional Office will support the design of policies for family agriculture development and the rescue of autochthonous products.

As a way of strengthening the inter-institutional coordination in rural development issues, RLC shares also with CEPAL the Executive Secretariat of the Interagency Group on Rural Development – IAG RD, integrated by 9 regional agencies (ECLAC, WB, IADB, GTZ, AECI, USAID, IICA, IFAD and FAO), which analyze current issues on rural development.
