Bioenergy

Due to the increase in oil prices and the Climatic Change phenomenon, today more than ever, the regular supply of clean and renewable energy has become one of the greatest challenges of humanity. In this context, the expansion of bioenergy appears to be an opportunity to increase the energetic security of the countries, reduce the gases generated by the greenhouse effect and generate manifold opportunities for agriculture and rural populations. The development of this new power source could provide services of clean energy to more than 2,400 million people who resort today to traditional biomass such as firewood, coal and animal manure to satisfy their energetic needs, and to the 1,600 million people with no access to electricity.

Being an agency for the generation of knowledge, analysis and dissemination, FAO is offering assistance to Member Countries for the development and the diversification of the energy matrix of the Region, in the context of the International Platform of Bioenergy. The development of this new power source is one of the key challenges facing the Region, and must be carried out taking the necessary steps to guarantee that people have access to the opportunities provided by this new technology and the risks it may have for the food security and the social and environmental sustainability of the nations are avoided.
