30th FAO Regional Conference ends in Brasilia
Brasilia, 18 April 2008 - The 30th Regional Conference of FAO for Latin America and the Caribbean concluded its deliberations after a week of debate on subjects related to food and agriculture. According to the report of the meeting, the countries recommended that FAO strengthen its efforts to support the governments in the areas of combating hunger, public-private collaboration for participative rural development, strengthening family farming, developing emergency response capabilities and facilitating south-south cooperation. Representatives of 21 nations participated in the meetings.

FAO Allies with AFA and PANAFTOSA to fight Trans-boundary Diseases
Santiago, 16 of April of 2008 - The FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean has signed memoranda of understanding with the Latin American Association of Poultry Producers (AFA, for its Spanish acronym) and the Pan-American Centre for Foot and Mouth Disease Control of PAHO/WHO* (PANAFTOSA) with the objective of reinforcing animal health activities to protect beef and poultry production in the Region. |
Latin America and the Caribbean Hit Hard by Soaring Prices
Brasilia, 15 April, 2008 – The problem of soaring food prices and their impact on food security is being analyzed at the 30th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean. FAO Director General Jacques Diouf affirmed that while “the rise in food prices could increase hunger, these higher prices could at the same time benefit millions of small farmers, men and women who produce food for their own consumption and for sale to local markets.” |

Jose Graziano da Silva: Haiti, the urgency of hunger

There was a noteworthy absence at the 30th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean, held in Brasilia last month. Haiti, one of first to confirm its participation at the priority-defining regional summit, cancelled at the last minute. The reason: the fall of the government of then-Prime Minister Alexis in the face of protests against the price rises of food and fuel. This evoked the words of the Brazilian sociologist Betinho: “The hungry are in a hurry.” So forget about talk.
