Reviewing biofuel policies and subsidies
7 October 2008, Rome - Biofuel policies and subsidies should be urgently reviewed in order to preserve the goal of world food security, protect poor farmers, promote broad-based rural development and ensure environmental sustainability, FAO said today in a new edition of The State of Food and Agriculture.

Urgent UN appeal for hurricane ravaged Haiti
Roma, 11 September 2008 - More than 50 000 families lost access to their usual food supplies and to their means of subsistence. Hunger and undernourishment will be worse in the months ahead if displaced rural households do not have the means to return to their agricultural lands. According to FAO, for agricultural production to continue, it is essential that immediate assistance reaches farming households that have lost their livelihoods. |
FAO analyzes impact of food price rises
in Latin America and the Caribbean
Santiago, Chile, 29 August, 2008 - "With the right support, small producers can cease being a problem and become part of the solution to achieving food security in the Region. Until now, public policies aimed at this group have generally favoured the social protection aspect – which is important - and have not given due attention to the productive potential,” affirmed the director of the Policy Group of FAO’s Regional Office. |

Jose Graziano da Silva: Haiti, the urgency of hunger

There was a noteworthy absence at the 30th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean, held in Brasilia last month. Haiti, one of first to confirm its participation at the priority-defining regional summit, cancelled at the last minute. The reason: the fall of the government of then-Prime Minister Alexis in the face of protests against the price rises of food and fuel. This evoked the words of the Brazilian sociologist Betinho: “The hungry are in a hurry.” So forget about talk.
