The mission of the Forest Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (COFLAC), the statutory and consultative support body for the forestry work of the FAO, is to advise FAO on the formulation of forest policies, review and coordinate their application in the region, and interchange information between countries of the region. The Commission meets every two years.


Chile Runs against Hunger (more information available in spanish)
The government of Chile and the Representation of FAO in Chile convoke the citizens of the country to participate in a "Race for Food" on 13 October this year as part of the commemoration of World Food Day. The race will wind through three municipalities in the metropolitan area of Santiago and is meant to draw attention to the issue of hunger, which effects up to 860 million people in the world today.

FAO to Hold Painting Contest (more information available in spanish)
To celebrate World Food Day, the Government of Chile and the Representation of FAO in the country have launched a painting contest. Paintings will have to be couched in the motto of this years campaign: "Global Food Security: the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy," and the winning artist will receive a prize of USD $1,000. The prize will also serve as payment for the acquisition of the work by FAO. The winning painting will be exhibited in the hall of the FAO building in Santiago, Chile, next to selected works receiving special mention, during the celebration of World Food Day.

FAO Acuiculture Sub-Committee Meets in Chile (more information available in spanish)
The next meeting of the FAO Aquiculture Sub-committee will take place in Puerto Varas, Chile, on the 6th to the 10th of October, with the support of the Sub-Secretary for Fisheries of Chile.

Last Chance to Honor the Pledge on Hunger
JACQUES DIOUF: "As world leaders meet at the United Nations in New York to renew commitments to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015, it is probably the last chance they will have of honoring the solemn pledge made under MDG 1 to reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger. "

Latin America and the Caribbean Without Hunger Initiative will Present Advances (more information available in spanish)
On the 6th and 7th of October, the third meeting of the "2025 Workgroup" (GT2025) of the Latin America and Caribbean without Hunger Initiative will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The meeting will feature presentations on the advances to date towards the objective of 
completely erradicating hunger in the Region.

IX Conference of Ibero-American Agriculture Ministers (more information available in spanish)
More than 70 representatives of local, national and regional organizations, both private and public, came together in Sonsonate, El Salvador, to participate in the "Ibero-American Rural Dialog", an event which served as a preliminary round of debate for the IX Ibero-American Conference of Agriculture Ministers.

Meeting of Regional Experts: Design of Policies for Food Safety Control Systems (more information available in spanish)
From the 1st to the 3rd of October, experts from around the Region will meet in the Regional offices of FAO to discuss the process of designing policies and strategies for control systems related to the innocuity of foods (or food safety).

New Online Tools for Food Standards (more information available in spanish)
FAO and the Codex Secretariat have developed new tools related to the Codex Alimentarius which are now available electronically. These include data bases on pesticide residues in food, veterinary medecine residues in food and the general Codex norms for food additives.

Chile: FAO Donates Computers to Indigenous Association Mapulahén Lafkenche (information available in spanish)
FAO Regional Representative Jose Graziano da Silva, accompanied by Deputy Regional Representative and FAO Representative in Chile, Margarita Flores, delivers a donation of six computers to the "Corporation for Local Positioning", (POLOC), of Chile.

Sustainable Forestry Management in Latin America and the Caribbean (more information available in spanish)
The Regional Office of FAO hosted the first meeting of the Expert Panel of the Project, "Searching for Exemplary Cases of Sustainable Forestry Management in Latin America and the Caribbean".

Central America and Dominican Republic: A Project Begins Aimed at Preventing Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (more information available in spanish)
In El Salvador, a project launch workshop was held for the FAO project, "Strengthening the System of Prevention of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy and the Adoption of Good Practices in Feeding Animals".
