Food Safety and Animal and Plant Health
Latin America and the Caribbean face greater risk associated with pests and food and animal diseases as a result of increased agricultural production, climate change and greater trade in the region. The risk of animal-borne diseases and food poisoning has also increased.
These events cost the region's governments, producers and consumers billions of dollars each year, pose a threat to public health and have an adverse effect in food safety and trade.
The best strategy for reducing these risks and addressing them in a timely manner includes technically advanced national systems that focus on animal and plant health and food safety and the development of regional programmes for pestand disease prevention, control, and elimination.
FAO supports the strengthening of these animal and plant health and food safety services, contributes to the production of healthy and safe foods and supports risk management for public health and food safety.
